For business reasons and following an extensive strategic analysis based on long-standing market and sales trends, Philips Lighting Electronics North America has announced plans to cease manufacturing operations at its Advance Transformer plant located at 801 E. Prairie Street in Boscobel, WI by the end of 2008. The overall transition of the ballast market from electromagnetic to electronic technology over the years combined with the enactment of Federal legislation that officially outlawed production of the electromagnetic fluorescent ballasts (in favor of higher-efficiency electronic ballasts which are produced in other of the company's facilities) has continued to reduce the demand for electromagnetic ballast technology. Responding to these clear market trends, Philips Lighting Electronics' decision to close its Boscobel facility is a necessary action which will help consolidate the company's manufacturing and enable it to streamline its production process and compete more effectively in the marketplace. Activities surrounding the closure of the facility and the reduction of the workforce will commence in mid-February 2008 and are expected to be complete by the end of 2008. As always, Philips will manage all matters related to the facility and the facility’s roughly 200-member workforce in a respectful and professional manner and in full compliance with any legal requirements. The company is taking exceptional steps to provide extended financial and benefits support to affected employees and is also working closely with local and state officials to assist employees in placement and/or retraining programs.
