Dear Citizen of the Year Committee:

It is with great honor and privilege to nominate this year’s “Citizen of the Year”. This year’s candidate is a well respected citizen and is a Boscobel native. Born and raised on a farm in Crawford County, one of 16 siblings, he knew what it was like growing up in a typical large family. A 1963 graduate of Boscobel High School, he participated in a variety of sporting activities including wrestling and football.
He was an active FFA member and still farms to this day. Enlisting as a National Guard member while in high school, two weeks after graduation he spent six months at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Not much could keep this Boscobel native away from his hometown. He returned there after serving his country and married his high school sweetheart in the summer of 1964.
Starting a family of his own and establishing his career in Boscobel, he was employed by Ralph Goldsmith at the Boscobel Dial in early 1964. He seized the opportunity to become a business owner in Boscobel after purchasing the commercial printing division of the Boscobel Dial in 1984. He has been a Chamber of Commerce member ever since. Serving the community has always been his priority, with youth and education especially important.
He has served on the school board for 15 years and was the school board president for 9 of those years.  During his tenure, he was also elected to the CESA board and served several years as president of that group as well.  For him, volunteering for school activities, such as chaperoning for music trips and supporting athletic booster functions has always been the norm. His family has welcomed foreign exchange students into their home.
He has been instrumental in environmental issues such as raising pheasants for release through the school biology program. Most recently he is actively involved as a member of the Paul Brandt forestry program with the school. When needed, he is always a willing volunteer. He recently took time out of his busy schedule to help construct the new Athletic Booster concession stand.
He has participated in the school work study program tying the importance of education with local business.  He has been a generous supporter and sponsor for community events whether to help a family in need or ongoing programs such as Boscobel Sportsman Club, Ducks Unlimited, National Wild Turkey Federation and Pheasants Forever. His local printing business has generously supported the school athletic booster calendars and year books.
He has been active in his church serving currently as council president and lending time to church improvements such as replacing windows or repairs. He has been a volunteer at Sugar Creek Bible Camp.
Although he may be busy tending to his livestock, making hay, or boiling down maple syrup, he is always willing to lend a helping hand to others. Need help cutting down a tree, putting up a fence, or getting your crop in, just ask. Another passion has always been teaching life’s lessons. As an avid outdoor enthusiast, a sure bet on a weekend if he isn’t helping someone else, you could catch him making time to take a friend or newcomer fishing or hunting. Nothing beats the smile on a young child’s face when giving a tractor ride or showing off his harvested pumpkin patch to his grandkids.
In addition to his wife Belle Ann of 45 years, He has 3 daughters, Pam, Lori and Jill as well as 6 grandchildren.
A truly well rounded citizen, it is without hesitation that we announce Edward Achenbach as this year’s “Citizen of the year”.
